Catamaran Hills Vineyard thrives in a distinctive setting, with sloped terrain, elevated sites, and granite-rich soils that provide excellent drainage. The vineyard spans approximately five acres, primarily cultivating Bordeaux-style grape varietals, ideal for producing wines of structure and character.
One of the red varietals is Cabernet Franc, which has
earned international recognition for its quality in Virginia. This spicy and peppery wine exhibits a range of aromas, including plum, blackberry, and tobacco notes. It is regarded as one of Virginia's finest red wines.
Another notable white varietal grown at Catamaran Hills Vineyard is
Petit Manseng, which is known for producing distinctive dry white wines. Its loosely packed clusters enable it to thrive late into the growing season. Petit Manseng offers rich aromas of candied fruit and spice, often accompanied by flavors of honey, nuts, and pineapple
Petit Verdot has also emerged as a star red varietal in Virginia, and Catamaran Hills Vineyard recognizes its potential. This grape contributes to the production of dark, full-bodied red wines with a deep purple color filled with dark fruit flavors such as blackberry, and black plum, Petit Verdot wines often exhibit spicy notes of leather, coconut, smoke, and dark chocolate.
Carmenere, a red varietal that shares similarities with its Bordeaux counterparts Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. It showcases good structure in terms of both acidity and tannin profile. Carmenere exhibits a range of flavors and aromas, including peppery, leafy, blackcurrant, and red and black fruit notes.
